Testing ... how do professionals do it, and what methods can be scaled for the development of one person?

I have been writing software for years, but have never mastered the art of testing. My typical testing involves rigorous testing on my machines, and then testing on various operating systems through VMware. Mostly brute force playing with her until she breaks or fits. If possible, I work on real equipment, but this is not always practical.

My question is twofold:

  • How do mid-sized professional development companies test?
  • What common methods or procedures (outside unit testing) can be applied to a development team from one. I am looking for practicality.

Thanks for your time and input.
