How to start an XP computer with MacOSX

On my home network, I can just ping between my XP machines. I can also ping my Mac from XP computers. However, when I try to ping my XP machines from the OSX terminal, I get an "unknown host" even when I add .local to the machine name. Pinging works if I use the IP address of an XP machine.

Some prerequisites ... I'm trying to configure ssh so that I can scp between machines. It would also be nice for Synergy, so I don't need to enter an IP address every time the machine reboots.

Any ideas?
