Kendall tau distance

The wikipedia article explains the editing distance of Kendall tau, but does not say too much about possible applications. When or why do you use tau distance? I am looking for examples in the real world, and have not come up with examples of mathematics.

Kendall Tau can be used as a metric to compare similarities between search results. For example, you can compare how close the top 10 results generated by Google and Bing are (for the same query).
