Where do four or gowalla get location data?

I know that foursquare uses google maps api, but how do they extract all business locations from google maps? Do they save each location in their database or simply access it when the user checks? sorry if I embarrassed you, but they are so curious !! :))

I did some research on this issue: they use google maps for api to get information for business places, geolocation, address, business, etc. if someone deactivates registration in the place, it is saved in the database. This does not allow them to save a lot of irrelevant places.

Another thing is that users or enterprises can create new locations if they want, because not all locations will be displayed on google maps!
