PHP 5.2.x, track file for changes, native fam?

I am looking for a FAM-like solution:

I have a file that is written randomly, I want to loop and wait for it to change, and then start my process.

I don't want to loop fstat sleep, if at all possible, fam_next_event is locked before the update and messed me up. Since FAM is not in PHP> = 5.0.5, and I really don't want to rely on what is no longer supported, I hope someone did something similar.

Is there a replacement for FAM? Something better / dear?
