I work in a small website development company (6 people), and we have been in the market for the new code / development environment editor for quite some time.
We are currently using Dreamweaver (CS3) encoding to develop our site. Each site file is hosted on the Dreamhost FTP server. All 6 of us are working on the same set of live files on a remote ftp server. Dreamweaver has a convenient file locking function that prevents us from overwriting each other’s changes, saving us from the same files.
Now we have found that this form of development allows you to develop very quickly and love how easy it is to do it. However, there are many things that we do not like. One of them is the Dreamweaver code editor. We also do not like our lack of code history for each site.
Does anyone know of a good alternative to Dreamweaver that has similar file / ftp blocking features?
If not, could you explain to me the best version control system configuration for our team? We are ready to look at GIT, Mercurial and Subversion. New system ideally:
1). Support for several different code editors in different operating systems. (The first version of Windows.)
2). Be as quick and easy to display code as you are now.
3). Allow working with files outside the office.
4). Be inexpensive.
