What technology would you use for physical simulations of SVG or Canvas?

I am starting a new project that converts physical modeling (created in Adobe Director) to a more modern platform, namely html5 or SVG canvas. I would like to avoid Flash for several reasons. I am looking for recommendations and reasons why any canvas or SVG is better suited for this project. I read that SVG is better for interactivity, which is important in this case, but that it is not the best with animation. The canvas is better at animating, but it is struggling with interaction, so I heard. Does anyone have any experience interacting on the side of the canvas, is it really difficult? Please advise. Thanks

See this question for a discussion of canvas frameworks and libraries:

What is the current state of JavaScript HTML files and HTML frameworks?

Several of these canvas libraries replicate SVG in terms of the interaction of objects with a fairly high standard. fabric.js looks especially good and is being actively developed.
