What is a text editor for a Java programmer?

I am looking for a text editor, does anyone have any recommendations? I will not use it for programming / compilation / debugging, Eclipse is already doing this fine. It will really be used to view the source and sometimes write / edit other files (e.g. SQL, plain HTML, JavaScript, etc.).

Requirements;

  • Works on Windows XP
  • Free
  • Easy (I don’t want to wait 10 seconds to load all its functions, I just want to see the contents of the file, and I want to see them right now)
  • Syntax highlighting (for all common file types, e.g. .java.sql.html.xml, etc.)
  • Tabs
  • No ads / annoying “donate to stop this message”

It would be nice to have the option of automatic formatting with customizable style and format settings, but this is not necessary.

I tried the following:

  • Text panel (not free)
  • EditPadPro (not free)
  • JEdit (too much footprint takes too long to load).

I am trying to use Notepad ++, but welcome your experience.

Notepad ++ must be correct.
Also try Emacs, but it doesn't look native (because when your code grows, regular expression searches come in handy where Notepad ++ doesn't work very well).

I really like the PSPad on Windows.
