Do I need a visual studio license?

I am a beginner freelancer providing .NET solutions. I currently have a student version of Visual Studio that I am working on. But, if I want to deliver solutions to customers, do I need to buy a VS license?

For example, I received a request from a client (does not have a VS license) for creating a web application in godaddy. In this case, do we need to buy a license?

Is there an alternative, for example, developing an application in the express editor of web developers and publishing using Nant tools?
