Pgpool-II for Postgres - Is this what I need?

I just stumbled upon pgpool-II in my search for clustering my Postgres database (just ready to deploy a web application in a couple of months). I still tremble with excitement, but I'm nervous, because every time I find something so excellent, I will soon drop. Do you have any experience with pgpool-II, and will it help me to run my database on multiple virtual machines and then on multiple physical servers? Is that all I need for backup, load balancing and higher availability for my database server !?

Also, is it easy to use the parallel query function (e.g. in Django or through Pythons psycopg2)? This would be great for reporting and aggregating!

Last: It seems to work between Postgres and psycopg2. Is this the correct understanding of this, so I can use psycopg2 in the same way as normal, without pgpool-II?

pgpool-II works great for what it claims to be. And it fits between your application and the database the way you expect; just point psycopg2 to it, and not directly to the database and from you.
