Emacs transliteration?

Question

Is there a way to make transliteration work in Emacs, sort of like in Gmail now? I am particularly interested in getting him to work in Cyrillic.

For reference, Gmail does something like the following: I can type svobodaand it will output . This allows someone like me to speak Russian, but cannot type in Cyrillic characters easily. In Gmail, this works with other languages, but I really only care about Cyrillic.
