There are several precedents for questions related to the search engine on StackOverflow, so please do not close this question. This programming is because META HTML tags can be called "programming."
Here's the problem:
We do FogBugz , a software scheduling and bug tracking suite.
Either we did a great job with our old documentation, or with a brief assignment with our new documentation, but for most of the popular search queries on FogBugz terms, documentation appeared for our old versions.
Here is an example . For context, our current version of FogBugz is FogBugz 7. The top two results for this search are for FogBugz 5, which is positively ancient.
As far as I can tell, there are several options for getting these results from the upper slots, but each has problems:
- Tag
NOINDEX, but what happens if someone is really looking for help on the old version? - Search for inbound links to old documentation and post
NOFOLLOWon them to strip old PageRank documents. The problem here is that it’s really inconvenient to find links to content, rather than changing the content itself. - A tag
unavailable_afterthat is just a delay NOINDEXwith the same delete problem, not a downgrade.
