Object element content to meet 508 requirements

One of the 508 compliance rules is that all OBJECT tags must contain the content of the element. I am not familiar with OBJECT tags or anything else, but what should usually contain content? I noticed that if I just put any string in the OBJECT tags, I seem to have passed the 508 test.

Is it possible to put anything in OBJECT tags to verify this pass? Can I just put a "useless string"? What effect does the content have?

The content is intended for backup in case the browser cannot display the object for any reason. Think of it as an attribute altfor elements <img>. Automatic verification cannot verify that you are investing something reasonable, only that you have invested something.

It is your responsibility to ensure that this content is reasonable. It should provide the best equivalent in text (or other HTML) that you can provide that conveys the same information that would be conveyed by the object if it were to be displayed.

Content should provide information equivalent to an embedded object.
