IAds displaying a portrait in landscape orientation from the start

Question

I got this iPhone app where I use AdWhirl to change between multiple ad networks. Now that iAds begins to turn, and the phone is in landscape orientation, before the ad appears, it displays a normal portrait of the iAd. If I then turn the phone to the portrait and return to the landscape, it will show the correct longer and thinner landscape version of iAd.

So why does it display a small version if the phone is in landscape mode before showing an ad?
