What is the meaning of TLD type domain identifiers?

"TLD-first domain-like identifiers" is a sip, but that's all I can think of.

I saw how they were used in different places over the years, and wondered what is the history / reason for this agreement, since you can be forgiven thinking that there is one sure way to name the domain.

I do not use Java, but I recall that this namespace is often executed as follows:

uk.co.tophats.stitchkit

Specification File for Launch Agent on Mac OS X:

ws.agile.1PasswordAgent.plist

Mac OS X Settings File:

com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist

Why is TLD the first? Is it just hierarchical pedantry, such as date formats in the UK and the USA?
