More Eyeballs on My Bad Mod_rewrite Attempt Please

We are changing the way we embed images in our blogs, but I need to make sure that previously embedded images are still displayed.

I am trying to redirect inherited links to embed images in a static image or in a single embedded image processing file. I am using mod_rewrite, but it seems like I am failing. Surprisingly, I managed to combine a functional set of rules that prevents hotlinking.

I have some difficulty redirecting inherited attachments to a single obsolete handler. This rule applies to the hotlink set [L], so it should only be evaluated if the deployment request is not the result of hotlinking.

Here is my attempt to redirect all requests to any file, for example gp[2]?.php[5]?\?p=(.*)

    RewriteRule %{REQUEST_FILENAME} gp[2]?\.php[5]?(.*)=(.*)$ [NC]
    RewriteRule gp[2]?\.php[5]?(.*)=(.*)$ /legacy/gp.php5$1=$2 [L]

But this will not work, I just get my wonderful 404 page.

Outdated URLs will have gp|gp2, php|php5and a query string of length n. They may not necessarily be in the catalog includes. I know this is dirty and terrible. Image embedding is now handled differently, it will never happen again.
