What does loop mean in loop device?

Question

This may be a linguistic question. I checked nofollow noreferrer → loop device on Wikipedia. It is easy to install files as a block device. But what does loop mean here? Its use here is completely strange to me. I am not a native speaker of English. So can anyone explain this jargon to me in plain English? :)

The same concept in file system loops means that the file system driver does not really go through the IO input stack of the hard drive and instead ends up using a regular disk image file for I / O.
