Web Application Deployment

Question

We use SVN. Is it a good idea to do svn up on a production server? If so, how will we roll back? What is considered the best practice for deploying web applications (our application is in PHP).

Boss wants to use FTP.

If your application is not very large, then upgrade svn or ftp to a new directory. When done, rename the old directory and rename the new directory.

Or just add a symlink and change it to a new directory.

If you need a rollback, change it, if not, delete the old copy when you upgrade again.
