ASP.NET: What deployment options do I have?

I will be managing a fleet of ASP.NET web servers soon ...

What are the technical limitations when deploying an ASP.NET web server? Can I just copy the file (s), restart the website, and am I good to go?

Isn't that different from what the VS2010 deployment does?

Does it matter whether I have a “type” of project: a website or a web application?
