What is a meaningful format for storing formatted text in a database?

I have an existing application that contains some parts of formatted text blocks (standard formats such as bold, italics, unordered list, ...) stored in the database. These text blocks are currently saved in custom XML format. The editor is created using WPF-RichtTextBox.

Since I have to make the editor more user-friendly and extend the application, and I know that in the future SQL Server Server Reporting Services and, possibly, Silverlight should use this markup, I’m thinking about changing the format of the saved text blocks. In the future, the following types of applications will appear that should interpret the markup:

  • WPF applications (with editor)
  • HTML Web application (possibly with an editor)
  • SQL-Server Reporting-Services
  • Silverlight (possibly with an editor)

I am using a subset of HTML. What would you use or advise and why? Maybe you also have a link to existing resources on this topic?

Update

Currently it seems that I will take HTML:

I plan to use RichTextBox in the als MainEditor WPF application. To convert, I will use the microsoft sample converter from here . Does anyone know if there is a newer version or some comments about pitfalls?
