If your functions fall out of UTF-8, you probably want to attach them to documents as attachments. Thus, you can also easily save multiple translations related to the same document. For example, you have a document containing metadata and then an attachment for each language. Keep the attachment names standardized - that is, en_US or whatever - and you can easily check if you have this translation.
