Glassfish Tomcat

What are Glassfish and Tomcat? I searched them and he says that GlassFish is an open source application server project launched by Sun Microsystems for the Java EE platform, but I really don't understand. Can someone explain to me?

Both are server environments for running J2EE (Java Enterprise) applications. Glassfish is a full-blown server implementation, and Tomcat is a container implementation:
