Cannot directly link to WMV video file

I have a wmv video hosted in SharePoint. I created a Content Editor web part with some custom content, and I posted a simple video link. <a href="http://mysite/video.wmv" target="_blank">Click to view </a>.

There is nothing special here. Some users may click on the link and the video will open in its default player. Other users see a number of different errors / hints. Some users are prompted to enter their network credentials, while others are prompted to "Internet Explorer cannot display a web page."

The same problems arise if I create a shared HTML web page (outside of SharePoint) and ask users to start the video.

I try to avoid embedding the video in HTML and just connect users directly to the video itself.

Has anyone encountered this problem and do you have any suggestions for doing this work?

This seems to be a combination of browser issues and file security.

People request their network credentials because the file itself is not "publicly accessible"; it requires authentication to be read or appears to be doing so from your description. When you try to authenticate for a file, different browsers will display different messages.
