Android: saving ListView data when closing the application

I have an Android application that has a list view that is updated throughout the life of the application.

I have an Exit menu option that saves the list data in a stream and then ends the application by calling finish ();

How to save data if the application is killed by the system? In particular, when should I save data in onStop, onDestroy or elsewhere?
