What is Extract / Transform / Load (ETL)?

I tried reading the Wikipedia article for “extract, convert, load,” but that just confuses me ...

Can someone explain what ETL is, and how is it actually done?

ETL receives data from one system (extraction), modifying it (convert) and loading it into another system (load).

And not necessarily in that order. You can use TEL or ELT. Probably not LTE. :-)

This is a common name for any process that takes data from one system and moves it to another.
