OS X: How to speed up the Java / Swing GUI?

I have a Mac mini with 2GHz-Core2Duo / 2GB RAM and an HP-Notebook with Windows 7 with identical hardware. For our Java desktop application, I use Quaqua and Windows look and feel, respectively. In OS X, the entire application looks much more sluggish than the one that runs on Windows 7, especially rendering.

Are there any options for OS X to speed up the GUI?

Update: I set the apple.awt.graphics.UseQuartz VM property to true and false, but that did not change the OS X 10.6 subjective performance.
