I would like to start using emacs, but I also want a graphical interface in which it will be available on Windows, ubuntu linux (desktop) and mac osx. Is GNU / Emacs for this? What other options exist and how different are each OS?
Also, are there any disadvantages of using emacs with gui (for example, I cannot use any widgets or use something else) and how do most other programmers prefer to use emacs? I want to use it as a replacement for textmate for ruby on rails development, any other suggestions?
