How to track the click of a Facebook Like Button?

I am creating a simple site. I am going to place Facebook Like Button on every article page of this site. How can I track how many people liked this article? Does facebook provide an API for this?

Explanation

I am going to write a script that will collect the number of “likes” for each page every hour. This would allow me to build a graph of popularity.

You will need to run FQL in a link_stattable that provides urlyour article and retrieves the field like_count. You can run FQL using the FB.Data.query()from the JS SDK.
