Tips for creating your own wiki?

My friends and I were thinking of starting my own wiki. Considering how widely they have appeared recently, we heard that it is not so difficult. We want the site to be as simple as possible - we have some experience with web design, but not much with system administration. What are some things we should keep in mind in the future (for example, which wikifarm might be useful or what reservations we should keep in mind)?

I guess from your question what you mean for personal, not business, use.

As Bayard suggests, the key to success is the social side. For the technical side, you will need a server (or someone prepared to host it) and good wiki software. The most obvious choice here is the MediaWiki, which is well developed (features), well tested, well known (via Wikipedia) and completely free. In addition, it can be easily expanded with the help of many new functions (extensions).

Spend time choosing software because it is difficult to change it later. WikiMatrix can help here (compare software).

However, the social side is also important. What is your theme? Why is this necessary? Could you do the same with Google Docs (if it's just for friends) or would you like more participation?
