What is a product version? why does it change by chance? For instance. New version of Firefox v.3.6.7. their previous version is v.3.6. I doubt why they are not using v.3.6.1 instead of using v.3.6.7. Is there any specific reason for this kind of version? or they give it randomly.

Each product chooses a version strategy differently, but usually it is something like the following:

3.1.1.123456
  • main version (large incompatibility of API / behavior, huge new features); example - iPhone 3 vs iPhone 4
  • ( , , API/ ); - iPhone 3 iPhone 3GS
  • ( )
  • , .

- .
