Are there any advantages to opening a user session in a new window without a browser menu after the user logs in?

Some websites (I have seen many banking websites) do this to login from their main website, and then when the user clicks on the login, a pop-up window will open with the user's session. This session usually does not contain any of their typical browser menus or URL bar.

I read from the point of view of users that this is not a good practice, because users crave dating and the loss of amenities such as the back button and the file menu can be disabled.

Can someone tell me what are the actual benefits of this practice?

Opening a web application on your own page without browser control starts to make sense when the application becomes rich enough to compete with the desktop application, and not be a bunch of pages that users view with minimal input for each. Among the advantages of ease of use:

  • Unsaved user input into fields cannot be lost due to switching to another page. In a regular web application, the user enters one page of input before looking at any other, essentially composing an application made entirely of modal dialog boxes.
