(C / C ++ / C #) DirectX 9 Overlay, preferably the same as xfire or Steam

I wonder what methods xfire and / or Steam use to overlay in games. I'm trying to do something similar, and I really would like to know what is the least intrusive way, Ie will not warn about any anti-cheat systems. I do not need any information from the game (without a wall BS). I would just like to show a rectangle with custom content in the game.

PS. I've seen some googling examples, but most of them seem very old. Are they still good options?
