Creating an AJAX Rich Mobile Site?

I am considering creating a mobile site rich in AJAX and JQuery functionality. Thus, the user can experience functions from the phone such as: drag and drop, "loading ..." images, dialogs that disappear and disappear, discard dialog boxes, dynamically resize dialogs, etc.

When the mobile site first loads, it will probably load the 500kb index.html page with the necessary CSS and jquery files. But from now on, any call to action will download html content asynchronously (that is, when a person clicks on a link, for example, β€œview the next 10 search results”, after the AJAX call, only the DIV container of the search results is redrawn) so that this minimizes data transfer.

My goal is to create an application that offers a rich user interface that meets the following criteria:

1) is responsive

2) limits the amount of data transfer

3) to cater to the widest audience of smartphone users, without having to develop N different frameworks: C lens for iphone, java for blackberry ,? for android ,? for windows mobile

Will the appropriate approach to the AJAX mobile site that I talked about meet my requirements?
