How to light a browser window / tab when something interesting happens on a page?

Hello

I want to report that something interesting happened on a web page that is in a browser window or tab.

Eg. In Gmail chat, if you are in another tab / window, and if someone writes you in the chat, the indicator lights up and shows some description.

How to do it in javascript / jquery?
