When is the executeSelectorOnMainThread call executed?

If I use a call to performSelectorOnMainThread inside a dedicated thread, when does the main thread execute the request? Does it do this right after the current main thread operation is complete, or is there some other type of hierarchy that determines when the executeSelectorOnMainThread call is made?
