How to automatically adjust the colors in the image?

Question

I will work with a set of arbitrary images. Some of them may require some color correction.

I opened an image that needs to be fixed in Photoshop and noticed that the yellow ones were a little high in the Histogram. I applied Auto Color and improved the image.

How it works? How to implement this? Am I looking for peaks in a histogram and averaging them over other peaks?

The language / syntax should not matter much.
