SharePoint in 2 places - any way to quickly do this for both?

Question

Our company has offices in the USA and the UK. We have a MOSS 2007 SharePoint installation, which is located in the USA, but both in the UK and in the USA, and uses the same content.

As a result, our UK office finds the speed at which SharePoint works very slowly, and thus provides a poor user interface.

Is there anything that can be done to make it fast on both sides? Do we need to do data replication across the Atlantic?

I would like to know how other companies deal with this problem.
