Cassandra over SQL as a cache?

Obviously, I am not an expert on Cassandra. So the question may sound silly.

Given an existing SQL-based project, it provides any benefit or it is even possible to use a non-SQL database (such as Cassandra) as an additional layer between business logic and an SQL database to speed up our queries or insertions.

This is a relatively new technology, and I'm trying to find its place.

Cassandra will work fine, but if you don't care, if you need to rebuild your data, memcached will be faster.
