.NET SharePoint, what do I need?

Question: I am an ASP.NET developer in about a year more.

I am thinking about changing the employer in the future, and I have seen acquaintance with the development of SharePoint as a requirement for many good job offers.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with SharePoint yet, so I wanted to know the following things:

1) What is it really good for / Why is it needed?

2) What do I need to start developing SharePoint, in addition to Visual Studio Professional 2005/2008/2010? (SDK, server ?, everything else)
3) The URLs of any good examples of online applications where I can take a look at the user.
4) The URLs of any good example SharePoint application that includes the source


I'm interested in the second point.

SharePoint is a Microsoft product. It has a website with a lot of information. Ever thought of going there and reading it?
