Django - Reversion and South - How to update past versions when updating a model?

I would like to keep previous versions of MyModel instances by updating and moving MyModel from the south.

Can I update past versions?
Do I need to update changes for all types of model changes?
What changes, if any, will make me erase the history of changes no matter what?
Is there an elegant way to automate the version upgrade process?
