Is it possible to work with sound coming through the headphone jack?

I am writing some audio applications for Android phones. These phones do not have a line-in, but they have headphone jacks that work with some headsets that include a microphone. Is it possible to work with the sound coming through the headphone jack if I plug in something like a portable computer microphone?

You need a 3.5mm TRRS-TRS adapter for a splitter that either breaks down into separate 3.5mm TRS jacks for a microphone, and audio, or just a 3.5mm jack for a TRS microphone.

The easiest way to find them is to search for “iPhone microphones for iPhone” (I spent three on my different phones, and each of them worked fine on non-apple products. I have HTC Touch HD, Motorola Milestone and Nokia N900) YMMV.

A quick Google search provided an example of a product (which seems too high by Finnish standards, but you get the idea) here
