WeakReference in Java inside a thread

I am trying to create a background thread that updates Runnable at a given interval.

Nor should the collection of “parent” be collected from garbage collection.

My problem is as follows. My WeakReference seems to act as a "strong" link, it does not stop my thread by accessing the runnable, which I have to make available to gc.

Why does my weakreference prevent gc?
