SharePoint Site Collection: Relationship with DB WSS_Content

What is the relationship between the WSS_Content database database and SharePoint? Is the database created for each site collection divided, or can one database contain multiple collections?

One database can contain several site collections. And a single web application can have multiple content databases.

Alternatively: The web application contains "0 or more content databases." The content database then contains 0 or more site collections.
