Can I use a thumb scanner to enter a web application?

Is it possible to allow users to enter my web application (php / mysql) using a thumb scanner? USB scanners seem affordable and not too expensive, but does anyone have any experience? How to make it work with php so that users, rather than filling out the usual username and password fields, can log in using a thumb scan. Is there access to open / relatively cheap solutions? So far I have found http://www.m2sys.com/ , which looks pretty decent, but a little expensive, given that I will need to first provide 400 users with scanners and all that.

This would be slightly less secure than what they are commonly used for, although it may be useful.

You will need to write a client-side application that can communicate with the scanner, or in some way the scanner will receive fingerprint data and then transfer it to the server.

However, this is where you really want (need) some security. You don’t want to just send fingerprints to someone over the Internet - it's like sending a password in plain text. Now anyone who listens can tell you the fingerprint data and hey! logging in!
