Custom Swing Appearance and Custom Components?

I am writing a game using Swing and want a distinctive “steampunk” inspiration for the GUI. This will require some animated components, short metal borders, etc.

I know that I can get nice effects by overriding paintComponent and doing all my rendering for custom lightweight components in this method.

Is this the way to go, or should I look at developing a brand new plugin Look and Feel?

What are the pros and cons of each?
