Use a large image (file size), but not impede download time?

My demo is here .

Basically, I have a HUGE image (19160px × 512px, to be precise, a little less than 2 MB), which I go to backgroundxwith javascript so that it looks as if the conversion were happening.

I cannot compress an image much more without ruining its quality. Is there any other way that I can achieve this with the same level of cross browser and not rely on plugins like flash, but does it load faster?

Do it in an animated gif? Divide it into separate parts to remove the entire area that is covered by the content.
