What in the world is .WORLD at the end of the database identifier?

Sometimes I see Oracle databases with type names SOMEDB, and sometimes I see SOMEDB.WORLD. I can use them interchangeably without apparent differences. What does the part mean .WORLD? Does it WORLDhave any particular meaning, or is it just an arbitrary string that is used? I also saw other extensions.

The default value is DEFAULT_DOMAINin sqlnet.ora.

It is assumed that it will be replaced by your organization domain, but administrators often leave it as it is.
