Why can't Google Reader detect feed for website?

I have two sites that announce an RSS feed, for example:

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="Awesome Site &raquo; Feed" href="http://url.to/valid/feed" />

Both sites run WordPress, but automatic feedline injection is disabled for a custom theme.

You can add one site to Google Reader by specifying only the domain name; another cannot be added without providing Google Reader with the exact feed address.

I do not understand how this is possible.

Google caches feeds in Reader. Its exact repeat interval is not known, but after a week or so, the problem is fixed when Google jumps the feed.

Are both output feeds valid XML?
