What fonts support a large number of weights? / How to fake a font-weight?

Question

Specifications:

• JS is required by amyway on the site. but prefer pure CSS / HTML
• Support IE7 +, iPhone
• Old browsers not supported (e.g. IE6)
• Standard HTML without crazy kludges (e.g. cufon, images, cifr).

Questions:

• Which fonts support 4 or more weights? Most seem to have only one or two. Answers so far:
  • Myriad Pro (supposedly? The test below does not work for me)
• How can I competently degrade to some other style that mimics the perceptual effect of font weight?
