How to render 3D fractals in the style of Mandelbulb

I'm interested in experimenting with equations for three-dimensional fractals (a la Mandelbulb). Does anyone know of a structure that will allow me to provide a 3-coordinate function of the Mandelbrot style, identifying a point as contained or not contained in the set, and visualization of the surface shape of the resulting set in 3D?

Obviously, a solution that the GPU can use for processing would be better.

3D Mandelbulb Ray Tracer from subblue got impressive results. It uses a graphics processor. It was used to create this fly . Perhaps not as programmable as we would like.

According to the documentation, this project on Github may correspond to an account: http://github.com/vain/GPUTracer . You can find more on googling "mandelbulb raytracer github"
